Generally, U.S. citizens 65 years of age and older, those with certain disabilities like End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS, and individuals who have been receiving social security disability for 24 consecutive months .
If you get Social Security or Railroad Retirement Benefits at least 4 month before turning 65, you will be auto enrolled in Medicare.
Medicare is a federal program for seniors 65 + and some younger people with disabilities, focused on age/disability, while Medicaid is a joint federal-state program for low-income individuals and families, focused on income.
Medicare is not mandatory but if you choose to enroll in any part of Medicare after the window period you should have enrolled, you could face penalties.
Original Medicare does not cover dental or vision care. However, you can purchase standalone dental and vision plans or some Medicare Advantage plans do provide additional benefits like dental and vision.
